Biographical Information[edit]

Red Porter had a brief but brilliant minor league career. In 1928 he played for the Idaho Falls Spuds, and in 1929 he was signed by the Oakland Oaks. He played a few games for them, but split most of his season between the California State League Bakersfield Bees, a farm club of the Oaks, with whom he hit .361 with a .728 SLG, and the Fresno Acorns, a team outside Organized Baseball. He spent nine of the next ten years playing in the Contra Costa Inter-Refinery League. In 1930 he played with the Associated club, from 1931 to 1934 he played with Union Oil, and from 1936 to 1939 he played with the Shell Oil Flying A's.

He was an all-around player, as he pitched, caught, played first base, third base, outfield, and, in his later years with the Flying A's, managed.

The source for his height and weight is the Oakland Tribune, 1928-1-13, p.35.

He played for Alameda in the 1929 California Winter League, a league sponsored by the Oakland Oaks and San Francisco Seals. He hit .247 with 40 hits in 162 at-bats, which probably contributed to his short career.
