Arthur (Red) Foley

Biographical Information[edit]

Red Foley, for more than five decades, was a celebrated sports writer, columnist and/or ML official scorer, arguably the most celebrated of his era in the latter category.

In 1947, straight out of high school, Foley joined the New York Daily News, where he would remain until his retirement some 34 years later. Starting in 1970, the focus of his reporting shifted almost exclusively to baseball, in particular, the New York Mets.

In 1966, he'd begun moonlighting as an official scorer and continued to do so for more than 3½ decades, scoring more than 3,000 games. Coinciding with Foley's 1981 retirement from sportswriting was a corresponding - and prestigious - addition to his official scoring duties. Starting in 1981 and continuing right up until his more comprehensive retirement in 2002, Foley would be an official scorer for 10 out of 21 fall classics.
