Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Raymond Guard played in the minor leagues in 1942 and from 1946 to 1947.

He was 6-10 in 31 games with the Welch Miners his first campaign. Then he went to fight in World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He was hurt and received a Purple Heart and, more than half a century later, a Bronze Star for his service. Returning to professional baseball, he was 10-11 with a 4.06 ERA in 26 games for the Bluefield Blue-Grays in 1946 and 10-7 with a 4.80 ERA for the same club in 1947. Overall, he went 26-28 in 77 games.

He played a major role in bringing professional baseball to Princeton, WV.
