Biographical Information

"I know that quite a number of major and minor league players have had battle experience, and there's a bunch of them on the front lines today." - Frank Shaughnessy, president of the International League in 1945, in response to hearing that Ray Flanigan was a hero in holding back German forces

Ray Flanigan pitched three games in the majors in 1946.

Baseball in Wartime has a page on him. Ray missed three prime years of his career to war, and was in the thick of the action in Europe. After the war he pitched well enough for the minor-league Baltimore Orioles that he was brought up to the majors. He pitched a few more years in the minors and then played semi-pro ball. He later died in Baltimore.

His grandson, Casey Baron, was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 34th round of the 2007 amateur draft.
