Ray Burpoe began his professional career with the 1953 Oshkosh Giants, hitting .214/~.290/.411 with three homers as a catcher and going 0-3 as a pitcher. He then played for the Fulton Lookouts, batting .143 with no home runs and six RBI to finish his career.
Personal Remembrance[edit]
Ray Burpoe (sp?) was a catcher on the 1953 Oshkosh Giants of the Class D Wisconsin State League. I was also a pitcher on this team. I believe this may have been Ray's rookie year in pro ball. He was a big strong athlete with a very strong arm. Because of his arm strength, I believe he also pitched at times. My recollection is that he could hit with power, but that his batting average was low. After a few weeks with Oshkosh, he was reassigned to another Class D club in the Giants farm system. He may have continued a pro career after the 1953 season, but I'm not certain. I think Ray hailed from the state of New Jersey.
