Biographical Information[edit]
Randy Martz had a career that lasted only four years in the major leagues, but in the dog days of the Chicago Cubs in the early 1980s, Martz participated in commercials and was a major young face of the team. He was a star pitcher in college who went 14 and 0 for the University of South Carolina in 1977.
He won 11 games in 1982, second best on the team behind Fergie Jenkins, but was out of major league baseball by the time the Cubs won the division in 1984. He threw a two-hitter on August 5, 1982 against the New York Mets. He gave up 1 run, walked 1 and struck out 2. The Cubs won the game, 5-1. The two hits were two singles by Ron Hodges. He wore uniform #34 between 1980 and 1982. He wore #33 in 1983, when he ended his career with the Chicago White Sox.
He only appeared in one game in 1983, in a starting role for the White Sox. In 5 innings of work in that August 5 game, he walked four and gave up four hits but still managed to walk away with a no-decision.
His minor league career ran from 1977 to 1985. He was an assistant coach at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1986. He was then head coach at MacMurray College from 1987-1990. 2017 was his 27th season as the head coach at Lewis and Clark Community College.
Martz lives in East Alton, IL. He was the manager of the River City Rascals from 2003 to 2006. Since 2007, he has been the pitching coach of the Gateway Grizzlies.
