Rafael Valdés was an infielder for Pinar del Río. After four seasons in Cuba, he had hit .288 and slugged .413. In his 5th year, 2008-2009, he batted .310/.386/.543 with 65 runs in 88 games and fielded .978 at second base. He hit 26 doubles, tying Rudy Reyes for fifth in the league. He was then put on Cuba's roster for the 2009 World Port Tournament; he hit .211/.200/.263 as one of Cuba's lightest threats, splitting second base duties with Yoilan Cercé.
