Pueblo Rollers

From BR Bullpen

The Pueblo Rollers represented Pueblo, CO in the 1941 Western League. The team went 52-54, 4th in the 6-team circuit, but the St. Louis Browns farm club then beat the Cheyenne Indians 3 games to 2 in the first round of the playoffs and took a 3-2 lead over the Norfolk Yankees before a storm flooded the Norfolk ballpark past the September 15 deadline for the completion of the season, giving Pueblo the title. Ace pitcher Robert Bergin (16-10, 2.57) led the league with 183 strikeouts, was second in wins and fourth in ERA. Outfielder Mike Kowal was third in average (.306), first in outfield fielding percentage (.989) and tied for third in RBI (74). The star was 1B Bernard Steele, the team's only All-Star. Steele led the league in runs (88), hits (158) and average (.383, 38 points ahead of Frank Bocek) and was second in doubles (24), RBI (87) and total bases (219) and third in triples (14). The Western League did not return in 1942 due to World War II and Pueblo finished up with a championship in its only season despite a .500 composite record for the regular season and playoffs.
