Biographical Information[edit]

Lefty pitcher Preston Tutein first signed with the New York Yankees in 1966. He pitched in 19 games that year, split between rookie ball and Class A. He was 1-3 with a 5.50 ERA; control was a prominent issue, with 33 walks in 46 innings pitched.

Tutein did not appear in the U.S. minors in either 1967 or 1968. He remained active at home, however; he was named to the Virgin Islands All-Star team that faced the Puerto Rican squad in the annual exhibition series of those bygone years. The 1969 edition featured Juan Pizarro and Felix Millan for the Puerto Ricans; the V.I. club included the major-league islanders plus an assortment of minor-leaguers and local standouts. (Tutein had also been a member of the 1966 squad.)

Tutein returned to the mainland in '69, pitching in 15 more games for the Yankees' Class A club at Fort Lauderdale. The results were fairly similar: 1-1, 5.40 with 17 walks in 25 innings pitched. However, he remained active for some time to come in the local recreational baseball league on St. Croix, making a comeback in 1978 after a three-year layoff.
