Biographical Information[edit]

Peter Stare pitched two minor league seasons in two different organizations. He appeared in 16 games (12 starts) for the short-season Northwest League Tri-City Padres in the San Diego Padres chain in 1972. His ERA for the year was a deceptively low 3.49, but he walked 49 batters in 80 innings, tossed 6 wild pitches, and gave up 93 hits, including 6 home runs. In addition, he allowed 20 unearned runs. He did not pitch in 1973, but was back in organized baseball in 1974, when he pitched 3 games, all relief appearances, for the class A Kinston Expos in the Montreal Expos chain. In 5 innings, he uncorked 3 wild pitches, allowed 9 hits, 6 walks, and 8 runs (all earned) for an enormous ERA of 14.40, and a WHIP of 3.000.

About a month after his pro career ended, he appeared as a contestant on Match Game 74. (Episode aired July 10.) On the show, he stated he was "forced into involuntary retirement due to lack of ability," and that he suffered from a "chronic disease called 'the hanging curveball.'"
