Biographical Information[edit]
Marion Brooks "Pat" Tobin pitched one game in the majors, for the 1941 Philadelphia Athletics on August 21, 1941 against the 1941 St. Louis Browns. He pitched the eighth inning, giving up five runs of which four were earned. Nobody got more than a single against him, but there were four singles, two walks and an error that that led to players getting on base.
Pat was also in the minors for six years, spending parts of four with the minor-league San Diego Padres. Also on the Padres team all four years was Cedric Durst. Durst, perhaps most famous as part of the 1927 Yankees, was first a teammate of Tobin and then a player-manager for the Padres during those four years.
Pat played baseball for the BB39 USS Arizona, a Battleship in the US Navy in the late 1930s. Games were played with other Battleships such as the USS California, USS Nevada, USS Maryland, USS Texas, USS Idaho, USS West Virginia, USS Oklahoma, USS Tennessee, USS Mississippi, USS Pennsylvania, USS New Mexico, and USS Colorado.
Out Navy, a magazine published for sailors at the time had numerous stories of the "big Arizona ace's tremendous power and speed that has so impressed his manager, Glenn Wright, an old Pittsburgh Pirate", stating that "with proper handling Pat will become a great hurler in the Big Leagues".
