Biographical Information

Overton Tremper was not your typical major league baseball player. An Ivy Leaguer, he came to the majors after getting his B.S. degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in 1927.

He had been on the baseball team at Penn from 1924-27, and was team captain in 1927. Almost immediately after graduation, he was in the majors. His debut was on June 16, 1927.

His batting average of .233 may not seem very impressive, but the team as a whole only hit .253. In Tremper's case, he was by far the youngest player on the team, at age 21 - the average age of the team was 30 and the team finished under .500. The team was obviously thinking about the need for young blood.

When he slipped under .200 in his second year, he was sent to Macon, GA in the Sally League. He played minor league baseball in 1928 and 1929.

He then became a high school math teacher. He received a master's degree in education from New York University in 1938 and took other courses at Hofstra University.

At the same time, he played semi-pro ball from 1930-42, and coached several sports at the high school where he worked.

After many years in New York, he retired to Florida. He lived to be almost 90.
