Biographical Information

Infielder Otto "Squeaky" Bluege was the starting shortstop for the 1933 Cincinnati Reds. appearing in 108 games and batting .213. He was the youngest regular on the team and, except for Tony Robello, was the youngest player on the team, whose average age was 30.8. Another young regular was a 25-year-old catcher with a prominent proboscis named Ernie Lombardi. Otto had played for Dubuque, Peoria and Columbus before his MLB time. After his lone ride as a regular, he played for St. Paul and Indianapolis from 1934-1936, as well as other teams through 1941. While playing for Milwaukee in 1937, he walked five times in a row in a game on May 10, setting an American Association record at the time.

Otto was the brother of Washington Senators star Ossie Bluege and scouted for the Sens/Minnesota Twins from 1951 until his death in 1977. In Baseball Digest from February 1972, Harmon Killebrew recalled how he had been signed by Ossie and, when he came to Chicago to join the Senators on the road, Otto met him at the airport and brought him to the hotel.
