Biographical Information

Oscar Horstmann pitched three years for the St. Louis Cardinals, going 9-4 in 1917. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I (BN). A grain inspector retiring in 1958, he lived in Kansas City, MO 40 years before moving to Salina, KS in 1967. He died from a heart attack at age 85 and was cremated.

Sporting Life spelled his name "Horstman".

"Oscar Horstman, the young Angel pitcher, who was about to be released when he suddenly obtained control of his fast ball, is being sought by Eddie Herr, scout for the St. Louis Cardinals. . . (He) has taken the place of 'Speed' Martin as the pitching youngster of the Pacific Coast circuit. Horstman is the kind of a twirler that lives on hard work and gets better with each performance." - Sporting Life, June 17, 1916
