Biographical Information[edit]

Orlin Collier pitched two games for the Detroit Tigers in 1931. Earlier in the season, he had been a teammate of Hank Greenberg on the Evansville Hubs, but Collier got the call in '31, while Hank had to wait to breakout (Greenberg had been up in 1930 for one plate appearance). Through 2019, the only other major leaguer with the last name Collier is Lou Collier.

Collier was born in East Prairie, MO in 1907 and attended high school in Arkansas. He went on to Ole Miss and played baseball, football and track. He not only threw a no-hitter in college, but also played semipro ball during the summers. After his brief big league flirtation, he apparently came to spring training with the Tigers in 1932 and 1933, but did not make the team. He started to have arm problems. He was with the Toledo Mud Hens in 1935, then pitched more semipro ball and became a minor league player-manager in 1936, leading the Northeast Arkansas League with 177 strikeouts. In all, he had at least 154 minor league victories in a career that lasted from 1928-1942.

After baseball, he ran a dry cleaning store in Arkansas. He suffered a fatal heart attack in 1944 while taking his wife to a hospital for surgery. His wife died from the surgery a few days later.
