Biographical Information[edit]
Omar Obando pitched in the Olympics and the minor leagues.
Obando led Nicaragua with five games pitched in the 1996 Olympics and his 3.38 ERA was second to Jose Quiroz. He walked 5 and allowed 11 hits in 10 2/3 IP, striking out six, and had no decisions. In the Bronze Medal game, he worked the final two innings of a 10-3 loss to Team USA, not allowing a run after replacing Oswaldo Mairena. He allowed one hit and two walks while striking out two and did not allow a run. He was then signed by the New York Yankees, as was Mairena.
Obando was 5-7 with 7 saves and a 3.65 ERA in 45 games for the 1997 Greensboro Bats; only Mairena pitched more games for them. In '98, he was 2-0 with two saves and a 2.60 ERA for the Bats. He missed most of 1999, presumably with injury, going 1-0 with four unearned runs in four innings for the GCL Yankees. The Tacoma Rainiers took him in the AAA phase of the 1999 Rule V Draft. He finished his US career with the 2000 Lancaster Jethawks, going 0-1 with 3 saves and a 4.43 ERA. Overall, he had gone 8-8 with 12 saves and a 4.43 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 89 minor league contests.
