Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Nick Plummer was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the 2015 amateur draft with the 23rd overall pick. He soon signed for a $2.1244 million bonus and then made his debut with the GCL Cardinals, hitting .228 in 51 games.

He became a free agent after the 2021 season, having missed two full seasons while a member of the Cardinals system: 2016 with a wrist injury, and 2020 because the COVID-19 pandemic had shut down the minor leagues. When he was able to take the field, he underperformed badly, batting .198, .205 and .177 in three full seasons from 2017 to 2019. However, he managed to turn things around after the pandemic, as he combined to hit .280/.415/.479 in 117 games between the AA Springfield Cardinals and AAA Memphis Redbirds, with 20 doubles, 15 homers, 71 runs scored and 54 RBIs. One would have thought that the Cardinals would have been interested in finding out whether this resurgence was for real, but they did not seem to make much of an effort to re-sign Nick, and he ended up signing with the New York Mets at the end of November, 2021.

In 2022, he opened the season in AAA with the Syracuse Mets, but after just one game, he was called up to the big team when the Mets had to place a couple of outfielders on the COVID list. He made his debut on April 15th, as a defensive replacement for right fielder Starling Marte in a 10-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. He did not get to bat in that game. His first at-bat came two days later and resulted in an out, after which he returned to the minors for a spell. His next major league game came on May 28th, when he was used as a pinch-runner against the Philadelphia Phillies, then finished the game in left field. He made his first start on May 29th, also against the Phillies, and there were some memorable moments: he thoroughly misplayed a fly ball by Odubel Herrera in the 3rd, allowing what appeared to be a routine play become a double, but he had a chance to redeem himself in the 9th, when his first career hit was a homer to the second deck in Citi Field against closer Corey Knebel that tied the game at 4-4, with the Mets winning it, 5-4, in 10 innings.
