Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Nick Bitsko was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 24th overall pick of the 2020 amateur draft out of a high school in his hometown of Doylestown, PA. He was only the second high school pitcher to be taken in a draft dominated by collegians due to the COVID-19 pandemic that was raging at the time; only Mick Abel, the #15 pick by the Philadelphia Phillies, had preceded him. In fact, very few scouts had seen him pitch in person as, in addition to no high school baseball taking place in Pennsylvania in 2020, he was not expected to be draft eligible until 2021, but he managed to graduate early from high school. He signed for a reported bonus of $3 million.

He did not pitch at all in 2021 after undergoing shoulder surgery in December of 2020. He finally made his professional debut in 2022 for the FCL Rays, then joined the Charleston RiverDogs of the Carolina League later in the season. He finished at 1-2, 6.23 in 14 games, including 12 starts, allowing 20 runs in 26 innings. His K/W rate of 20/27 was also very problematic as, two and a half years after being drafted, the jury was still out on whether he would turn out to be a complete bust.
