Biographical Information[edit]

Nemesio Romaguera is considered by many as "Father of Cuban Baseball." He was born in Havana, Cuba, but moved to Mobile, AL where he attended Spring Hill College starting in 1858 at age 11. It was here where he learned the game of baseball, and was eager to teach it to everyone upon his return to Cuba. In 1868, he met with Esteban Bellan and others, and founded the first organized baseball club in Cuba, simply called the Havana Base Ball Club. He played as a right fielder, shortstop, and second baseman during his playing days, and was involved with baseball until at least 1893. After his baseball career was over, he became a bookkeeper and died in 1931.
