Biographical Information[edit]

Naohisa Sugiyama pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball and for the Japanese national team.

Sugiyama represented Japan in the 2001 Asian Championship. The Hanshin Tigers drafted him in the free-acquiring Phase of the 2002 NPB draft. Sugiyama only had 3 appearances in his rookie year. He started 9 games in 2004, but his ERA was 5.03. The Kyoto native broke out in 2005. He was 9-6 with a solid 2.94 ERA. In the 2005 Nippon Series, he started in Game 4, allowing 3 runs in 3 1/3 innings and got the loss. The Tigers were swept by the Chiba Lotte Marines. He was 4-4 with a 3.09 ERA in 2006, and his pitching worsened to 4-5 with a 4.61 ERA in 2007. He only started 9 games in 2008 as his ERA was terrible 5.82. He only pitched 9 more games in the next two seasons, and the Tigers released him after the 2011 season. He announced his retirement in 2012.

Sugiyama's repertoire included a fastball (peak 93 mph), curveball, slider, shuuto and forkball.

Overall, Sugiyama was 21-23 with a 4.01 ERA and pitched 429 innings in 8 seasons in NPB.
