Biographical Information[edit]
Mort Scanlan played in the majors with the New York Giants in 1890. He was apparently in great demand during a year in which there were three major leagues, but the Giants ownership balked at paying Scanlan's asking price at a time when he had never played in the big leagues. Source: Sporting Life, April 2, 1890. The April 5 issue indicated he had signed, and mentioned he had played the previous year for a semi pro team in Chicago. The April 12 issue discussed his performance, saying he was "as green a hand as any of the youngsters", but that he could play, although he was slow defensively. He ended up playing three league games, from April 21-23, making 28 putouts at first base, and making no errors. He was also with Troy of the New York State League that year.
