Mitch Fienemann made his US debut in 2009. Fienemann was signed by the Boston Red Sox in 2007 but found out a few days later that he would need shoulder surgery. Boston released him and Fienemann wound up working in 2008 for the Australian Submarine Corporation. Tony Harris spotted a rejuvenated Fienemann and signed him for the Pittsburgh Pirates in early 2009. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette listed him as the first Australian amateur ever to sign with the Pirates.

Fienemann allowed one run in one inning in the 2008 Claxton Shield. He was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA for South Australia in the '09 Shield, giving up five hits in two innings.

Mitch made his US debut with the 2009 GCL Pirates on June 25, losing to the GCL Phillies. He was 0-2 with a 4.66 ERA after 3 games.
