Built in 1948, Mile High Stadium, originally known as Bears Stadium, was the home of the minor league Denver Bears and Denver Zephyrs for nearly 50 years. In 1968, ownership of the park was assumed by the City and County of Denver, and the stadium was renamed Mile High Stadium. The park's 21,000 seat east stands were built in 1977 and were movable to help convert the park from baseball to football. The stadium's field was heated electronically to prevent freezing, as well as to allow year round grass growth. The Colorado Rockies' first game here , on April 9, 1993, against the Montreal Expos drew 80,227 fans, the largest paying crowd in National League history. The Rockies also set the single season attendance record here in their inaugural season, drawing nearly four and a half million. After the 1994 season, the Rockies left Mile High Stadium for newly completed Coors Field.

Mile High was the home of the NFL's Denver Broncos both before and after its short stint as a major league ballpark. It was still the Broncos' home in march of 2022 when it was struck by a strange fire that burned part of two sections of seats near a club-level suite where the blaze apparently originated. The fire occurred in broad daylight in an otherwise empty stadium.
