Biographical Information

Mike Schemer was one of the first players who represented the US in an international tournament to make the majors. He appeared in the 1938 Amateur World Series, two years before Stubby Overmire was in an Amateur World Series.

Mike put up a pretty impressive batting line of .333/.368/.407 for the New York Giants in 31 games in 1945, but only got one more plate appearance with the same team in 1946. Schemer was a first baseman, and in 1946 Johnny Mize returned to the Giants to play first base after three years serving in World War II. The backup first baseman, Babe Young, had also been in military service from 1943 to 1945, returning to the Giants in 1946. Both were older than Mike.

Schemer went to the University of Miami and was one of the earliest players from that university to come to the majors. He was in the minors in 1940, 1941 and part of 1942, and missed 1943 - he also did his duty for Uncle Sam. He came back to play parts of three seasons with the Jersey City Giants during 1944-1946, a period that also coincided with his time in the majors. He then continued to play in the minors through 1948.

Mike always seemed to hit for a high average in the minors, although he had little power.
