Biographical Information

Shortstop Mike Moynahan played four years in the big leagues, and three of the four were good years with the bat. He broke a finger while playing in 1882, and while he had to have part of the finger amputated, he went on to hit quite well in 1883-84.

He debuted in 1880, and hit .330 in 27 games toward the end of the season. He had the highest batting average on a team that included two of the players who would soon form the Big Four.

1881 was not a good year for him as a hitter, but he came back in 1883 to hit .310 with 10 triples for the 1883 Philadelphia Athletics in the American Association. The team won the pennant and Moynahan had the highest batting average of the regulars.

In 1884 he closed out his major league career, still hitting above average.

In a bit of trivia, he is said to be the major leaguer with the fewest at-bats for one with at least 200 hits.

During the off-season of 1888-89 he was under consideration to possibly be the shortstop for the 1889 London team.
