Biographical Information[edit]
Mike Mattimore was a two-way player, with a pitching record of 26-27 in the majors and a batting average of .204. The batting average is misleading since he had an excellent year in 1888 sandwiched in between unimpressive years in 1887 and 1889-1890. To a certain extent, his pitching career was similar, with good years in 1887 and 1888 and less impressive years in 1889 and 1890.
He appeared in 63 games in the outfield, 58 as a pitcher and 7 as a first baseman. He also worked one American Association game as an umpire in 1888.
There was a W. Mattimore who played for two minor league teams in the state of Washington in 1891, perhaps a relative.
The book Connie Mack and the Early Years of Baseball says that Mattimore was one of the earliest users of the term "yannigans".
