Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Mike Martin was drafted in the 1st round of the 1970 amateur draft by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 5th overall pick but never made the majors. His father was Barney Martin and his brother was Jerry Martin, who were both major leaguers.

Not making significant progress as a pitcher, he tried his hand as a position player, spending the 1974 season as the starting first baseman for the Spartanburg Phillies of the Western Carolinas League. He hit .252 with 15 homers and 48 RBIs in 81 games, but went back to pitching in 1975.
