A first baseman at Towson State University, Gottlieb went straight from student to assistant coach under Billy Hunter and held that job from 1980-1987. In '88, he became head coach. He was named East Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 1988 and guided the team to ECC league titles in 1988 and 1991.
