Biographical Information

Miguel Abreu played in the minor leagues from 2006 to 2013. He peaked at Triple A.

Abreu was the 28th round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in the 2005 amateur draft. He hit only .226/.278/.426 for the 2005 Bluefield Orioles. In 2006, he produced at a .269/.296/.367 rate for the Aberdeen Ironbirds with only 8 walks in 69 games.

Miguel hit .267/.285/.426 for the 2007 Delmarva Shorebirds with just 9 walks in 124 games. He had 28 doubles, 13 home runs and 22 steals (in 26 tries), showing improved power and baserunning. He led South Atlantic League second basemen in putouts (238), assists (368) and errors (25). He was sent to the Honolulu Sharks in the Hawaii Winter League and batted .297 with a .449 slugging percentage, though he only had one walk to 118 AB. He made the league All-Star team at second base and was 10th in the circuit in average.

In 2008, Miguel hit .275/.304/.378 for the Frederick Keys and stole 21 bases in 31 tries. He began a busy 2009 with the Ponce Lions, going 0 for 1 in the 2009 Caribbean Series and being caught stealing twice. In the Eastern League All-Star Game that season, Abreu had two hits, two runs, two steals and two good defensive plays to win MVP honors to lead the South to a 5-3 win over the North. For the campaign, he hit .290/.311/.382 for the Bowie Baysox and stole 25 bases in 33 tries; he also rapped 31 doubles. He drew 12 walks in 510 plate appearances. Abreu then played for Puerto Rico in the 2009 Baseball World Cup. He reached Triple A for the first time in 2010 and stole 35 bases in 2011. In 2012 and 2013, he played in the Philadelphia Phillies system, and over the next two winters, he played in the Puerto Rico Winter League.
