Biographical Information

Mickey Hughes pitched three years in the majors with a record of 39-28. He went 25-13 as a rookie for the 1888 Brooklyn Bridegrooms which went 88-52, and he was 9-8 for the 1889 Bridegrooms who won the American Association pennant with 93 wins. He was on the 1890 Brooklyn team for part of the season; it also won the pennant but Hughes spent part of the season with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1890 who released him in September.

Only 5' 6", he is one of the shortest men to pitch in the majors.

The book Baseball in 1889 states that Hughes never recovered from a sore arm he developed early in 1889.

Pitcher Jay Hughes, seven years younger, who came up in 1898 and also pitched for Brooklyn in 1899 and 1901-1902. Since both were stars on the same team (although not at the same time) and both had short albeit excellent major league careers, it was often mentioned that they were brothers. However, census records disprove this.
