Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Mike Pill played in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization from 1977 to 1979. He was taken by the club in the 2nd round of the 1977 amateur draft, one pick after pitcher Keith Creel and two ahead of hurler Joe Beckwith, and in the same round as outfielders Mookie Wilson and Kevin Bass. With the GCL Pirates in 1977, he went 3-5 with 4 complete games and a 2.66 ERA in 10 starts. He was 0-3 with a 3.60 mark in 3 starts for the Charleston Pirates in 1978 and 4-5, 3.47 with 5 complete games in 12 games (11 starts) for the Shelby Pirates in 1979. Overall, he was 7-13 with 10 complete games and a 3.18 ERA in 25 games (24 starts) over 3 seasons. In 164 innings, he allowed 138 hits and 57 walks, while striking out 85 batters.

He first attracted media attention as a pitcher for Edgewood High School in West Covina, CA, when he won a record 33 consecutive decisions with an ERA of 0.50. His 1977 high school team is considered one of the 10 best in the history of California, largely thanks to his heroics on the mound, although teammate Rick Aguilera is the one who made it to the Show.

His sons, Tyler Pill and Brett Pill, later played in the major leagues.
