Miami-Dade County is located in southeastern Florida, comprising a large quadrant of land that begins with the communities of North Miami Beach, FL and Miami Gardens, FL in the north, includes the city of Miami, FL proper and the suburb of Hialeah, FL and all of Miami's southern suburbs. It reaches to the southern tip of the Florida Peninsula; its western half is formed by Everglades National Park, but the Florida Keys are not included. Its population is over 2.6 million.

The county is a major player in regional government in the Miami area, although some parts of the metropolitan area, around the city of Fort Lauderdale, FL, to the north, are not included in it.
