Biographical Information[edit]
Mel Steiner was a minor league outfielder from 1940 to 1946 and 1948. He was in the Pacific Coast League in the war years (1943-1945), otherwise he played in the lower leagues in the southwest. He also spent much of 1941 in the military.
Steiner began his umpiring career in the Pioneer League in 1951-1952. He worked the Western International League in 1953-1954, California League in 1955 and PCL from 1955 to 1960. Steiner was a National League umpire from 1961 to 1972.
