MediaWiki:Uploadtext/baseballcard

From BR Bullpen
This form is only for uploading images of baseball cards. Specifically, this is a page for fair-use images, for images of baseball cards that in the public domain, please use the public domain baseball cards form. To upload other pieces of work, please use a different form.
Why am I here?
Images baseball cards, like baseball cards themselves, are copyrighted, with exclusive rights to use them, to copy them, and to make works derived from them reserved to the copyright holder - often the manufacture of the card or the company that produced the card. The Bullpen respects the copyrights of others — do not upload images that violate others' copyrights.
What are the limited conditions?

In general, non-free content uploaded under the Exemption Doctrine should be used only when the specific image itself is significant to the article, not merely what it depicts. The image must be not replaceable by a free content alternative that depicts the same thing.

In other words, a screenshot from a movie is acceptable to use when talking about the movie itself — it is not acceptable to use it to talk about the actress who happens to be in the picture. (It is possible for a free content picture of the actress to be taken.)

If you are still in doubt, ask at Can I use... before uploading the image!

Preparing for upload and usage
The image is too small?
For most typical modern cards with dimensions of 2-½ inches by 3-½ inches (6.35 cm by 8.89 cm) -- for a height-to-width ratio of 1.4:1 -- a width of between 200 to 250 pixels is generally fine. Anything larger would infringe on the image's copyright, while smaller images are often cause the image to be unsuitable for use.
The card has the image of two (or more) subjects in it, can I crop out the pictures?
No, since these card images are being used under fair use provisions the entirety of the card must be show.
Where can I use this image?
Since the use of these card images used under fair use provisions, they may only be used on the article of the depicted subject(s), or articles on baseball cards or the card companies themselves for illustrative purposes. Use on other pages not state in the description is not allowed. When placing the image on a page, a description of the card (i.e. year, company, set, card number, and subject) should be included.
I have a bunch of baseball cards of a player, can I upload them all?
While adding the cards would be permissible, most would be deleted due to the large amount of duplication. The card image should provide a general idea of what the subject looked like, thus often only one image is required. There are exceptions to this, for instance a player with an exceptionally long career may have multiple images depicting the subject at different ages, or a player-turned-manager or coach may have images depicting the subject as a player and manager or coach.
