Biographical Information[edit]

Maurice "Spike" Gorham graduated from Proctor High School in 1933. He then attended Duluth State Teachers College, now the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he participated in football, basketball, and track and field (UMD did not offer baseball until the 1970s) before graduating in 1937. He was named All-Conference twice for football and is the only four-year All-Conference basketball player in UMD history.

He played professional baseball for the Brainerd Blues in 1935, the Superior Blues in 1936, and the Des Moines Demons in 1937. He hit 37 home runs in his three seasons in the minors.

He taught and coached sports at Shakopee High School and New Prague High School before moving to Albert Lea, MN to work for Wilson Meat Packing. He was MVP of the 1948 Minnesota state amateur baseball tournament for Albert Lea. He moved to Fairmont, MN in 1950 and was the playing manager of Fairmont's amateur team. He owned a restaurant in Fairmont and served as a high school sports official for more than 30 years.

Gorham is a charter member of the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame (1963), the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame (1991), and the Proctor Baseball Hall of Fame (2020). He is also in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame (1990).
