Timms was signed by the Atlanta Braves in February 2005 but would not make his minor league debut until 2008. In the meantime, he made his Claxton Shield debut in 2007, allowing two runs in four innings for the Australian Provincials. In the 2008 Claxton Shield, he gave up 11 runs (7 earned) in four innings. He split the summer of 2008 between the Danville Braves (1-2, 2.45 in 7 G) and Rome Braves (1-1, Sv, 7.50 in 9 G). He struck out 39 in 29 innings in his brief US career but walked 22 and threw eight wild pitches.

He then did not appear again until the 2014-2015 Australian Baseball League, when he was 0-2 with four saves and a 3.86 ERA for his hometown Brisbane Bandits. He was 5th in the league in saves. In 2015-2016, he went 2-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 28 games, striking out 39 but walking 22 in 34 2/3 IP. He was third in the ABL in games pitched, behind Ryan Searle and Eric Green.

Timms made the Australian national team roster for the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers in Australia in February 2016, but did not get into a game (neither did 6 of their other 13 pitchers).
