Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Matt Smith was taken 16th overall by the Kansas City Royals in the 1994 amateur draft, one pick ahead of catcher Ramon Castro and ahead of outfielder Jay Payton. He was drafted as a pitcher, but converted to the infield.

He played until 1998, but never reached above Double A. For his career he batted .243/.302/.332 in 398 games. He made two starts his first year, posting a 0.00 ERA in four innings for the GCL Royals, and he converted back to pitcher his final year, posting a 3.81 mark in 26 innings for the Lansing Lugnuts.
