Biographical Information[edit]
Matt Magers has been a college coach.
Magers was All-North Central Conference once at South Dakota State. The Chicago Cubs took him in the 16th round of the 1997 amateur draft. He was 4-4 with 5 saves and a 3.58 ERA in 27 games that summer for the Williamsport Cubs, albeit with 35 walks in 50 1/3 IP. He made 50 appearances for the 1998 Rockford Cubbies, going 2-6 with 5 saves and a 2.60 ERA, but walked (32) more than he fanned (31) in 52 IP. He tied Keith Linebarger and Steve Worrell for 5th in the Cubs chain in games pitched and just missed the Midwest League top 10 in that department. He had a 3.08 ERA as a pro.
Matt was pitching coach of Mankato State University from 2000-2008 and became head coach when Dean Bowyer retired. He went 38-17 his first year, 44-16 his second (with a trip to the 2010 Division II College World Series and 40-12 his third. He set a school record for wins (51-12) in 2012 and the school was third in the 2012 Division II College World Series. The record was 42-9 in 2013 and they placed second in the 2013 Division II College World Series; Magers was named NCBWA National Coach of the Year.
