Biographical Information[edit]
Matías Carrillo was a bench bat with the Florida Marlins in 1993 and 1994, after three games with no at bats with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1991. He hit .251 in 191 career at bats.
His bat was far more robust south of the border. Carrillo rates second all-time in batting average in Mexican Pacific League history at .293 (entering the 2005-2006 season). Only Hector Espino (.329) was ahead. When "El Coyote" retired from the Mexican Summer League, Liga Mexicana de Beisbol (2010), he had scored 1,535 runs and produced 1,554. Only Héctor Espino (1,505; 1,573) and Alejandro Ortiz (1,509; 1,603) had done better. In 2014, he still occupied 2nd and 4th place in league history. But Carrillo may be the only player in professional baseball to have scored and produced his 1,000th run in the same game: April 5, 2000 in a game with Tigres de México against their arch rivals, Diablos Rojos del México. His number 24 was later retired by the Tigres de Quintana Roo.
In 2011, Carrillo managed those very same Tigres to the Mexican League pennant. In 2013-14, he led the Naranjeros de Hermosillo of the Mexican Pacific League to their 16th crown and won the 2014 Serie del Caribe at Isla Margarita, Venezuela. It was the first time a Mexican representative won back-to-back Caribbean Series (Yaquis de Obregon won the title in 2013).
