Robert J. Hiegert Field was named after the long-time CSUN coach Bob Hiegert, who won two NCAA Division II World Series with the Matadors. Orgionally the field was named 'Matador Field' and was known as such from 1961-January 2025. It seats over 1,000 fans. In 1975, a three-year renovation process began which saw a new infield, scoreboard, batting cages, fencing, bleachers, and press box installed. A clubhouse adjoining the Matador dugout was constructed in 1981.
In 2017, new renovation plans were revealed with a total cost of $15 Million. The stadium will expand its capacity and overhaul its entire look including: new concession stands, new entry way honoring the Matadors' baseball history, an expanded hitting facility, state of the art team building, stair back seating with premium areas, new restrooms, children's play area, and grass berm seating. Although planned in 2017, as of 2023 there has still been no improvements made to Matador Field as it has been mostly unchanged since the since the early 1990's.
The distance down the lines is 325' with 400' to dead center. Matador Field is one of the last Division 1 schools on the west coast without lights.
In 2024, the field featured a new led video board that was installed in April.
The field's new name coincided with the addition to lights for night games which will be used for the first time in the 2025 season.
