Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Mat Olsen was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 9th round of the 2021 amateur draft from Central Arizona College. He began his pro career that same season with the ACL Giants Orange, pitching three scoreless innings in as many games.

In 2022, he split his season between the San Jose Giants of the California League and the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League, going 8-1, 3.41 with 2 saves in 36 outings, all in relief. He struck out 83 batters in 58 innings, showing some overpowering stuff. In 2023, he started the season with Eugene before receiving a promotion to the Richmond Flying Squirrels of the AA Eastern League at the end of July. On July 4th, he was part of a historic day for the Emeralds as four pitchers combined to pitch a no-hitter against the Tri-City Dust Devils. The game was still scoreless after he relieved starter Hayden Birdsong after five innings, and he continued his good work with two innings in which he struck out five batters. he was given credit for the win when Eugene scored a first run in the bottom of the 7th. William Kempner and Sam Delaplane completed the game with a hitless inning each in the 3-0 win. Overall, Mat went 5-3, 5.14 in 41 games that season, most of the damage coming in his 14 games for Richmond, during which his ERA was 8.53. His strikeout rate was still excellent, with 84 in 56 innings over the two stops.

He was back with the Flying Squirrels at the start of 2024, but was still struggling against AA batters. After 16 games, his ERA was 7.11.
