Massachusetts game
The Massachusetts game was an alternative set of rules that amateur clubs would sometimes use until the New York game became the undisputed standard for baseball rules. Alexander Cartwright insisted that games played by his team would always involve the New York rules which he had invented.
Although the New York game became the standard set of rules for baseball, Ty Cobb recalled that when he was a child the Massachusetts game would sometimes be used in amateur games.
