Biographical Information[edit]

Mary Nesbitt was a star in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League as both a pitcher and at first base.

Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Nesbitt graduated from high school in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She then joined the AAGPBL in its inaugural season of 1943, playing for the league champion Racine Belles and going 26-13 on the mound. She won 23 games for Racine the following summer. After breaking her collarbone in 1945, she was moved to first base and responded by hitting .319 that year to tie Helen Callaghan for the league lead.

Nesbitt did not play in 1946. Instead, she lived in Georgia and married Vester Wisham, who was a bus driver for the Belles. She returned to baseball in 1947 with the Peoria Redwings. The next year, she paced the circuit with 24 doubles, while hitting .292. She retired in 1950, when she was pregnant with her first son.

After her pro ball days, Nesbitt moved to Hollister, Florida, where she raised a family. She drove a school bus for more than 20 years and continued to play softball for many years.
