Biographical Information

Outfielder Marvin Benard spent his entire major league career with the San Francisco Giants. A veteran of nine seasons, Benard was a starting outfielder during three of them (1999 to 2001) with his best season coming on the strength of a .290/.359/.457 line with 16 homers and 64 RBI in 1999. Benard hit the Giants final home run in Candlestick Park history, off Jeff Williams of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and was a role player on the 2002 National League champion squad. His final season was spent in Triple A of the Toronto Blue Jays organization in 2004. In April 2010, Benard told the San Francisco Chronicle that he took steroids during the 2002 season, during which he made only 131 plate appearances. His name had already been mentioned in the Mitchell Report in 2007. "To be honest, it was an embarrassing moment that you can't take back," he told the newspaper. "When you're playing, you do some dumb things, thinking 'This is going to help me'. You realize later they were stupid."

Benard became a coach with the Tri-City Dust Devils in 2015. He currently provides color commentary on Giants Spanish-language broadcasts. His son, Isaac Benard, played in the minors.
