Biographical Information

Marty Karow played in the major leagues in 1927 for the Boston Red Sox. Karow was a 22-year-old infielder on the Red Sox that year, as was Billy Rogell, who played briefly with Boston before moving to a long career with the Detroit Tigers. Whereas Karow got only the one shot and hit .200, Rogell had had a previous shot in 1925, when he hit .195.

He was a star athlete in college, as thew quarterback and captain of the Ohio State University football team.

Later, Karow was coach at the United States Naval Academy (1936), Texas A&M University (1938-1941, 1948-1950) and Ohio State University (1951-1975). He led the Buckeyes to the College World Series in 1951, 1965, 1966, and 1967, winning the 1966 College World Series. He managed Team USA to a Gold Medal in the 1967 Pan American Games, the only US Gold in the event through 2011.
