Biographical Information[edit]
Mark Johnson was an American League umpire from 1979 to 1999. He worked the 1990 All-Star Game, 1993 World Series and 1999 All-Star Game. He was one of 22 umpires to lose their job in Richie Phillips' botched resignation bargaining ploy. When the issue was settled in 2004, he decided to retire with a severance payment and benefits instead of reintegrating the active umpiring ranks.
He began his professional umpiring career in the Gulf Coast League in 1971.
