Mark Arata umpired one American League game on April 8, 1991 as a fill-in umpire. The regular umpires had gone on strike (labor) during spring training that year. The conflict had only been resolved on the last day before the regular season, and as result, they could not get to the game in time for Opening Day, forcing the use of fill-in umpires. Former major league umpire Bill Deegan worked home plate in the game between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers at Tiger Stadium, while the rest of the crew had no major league experience.
