Biographical Information[edit]
Mario Vega hit .298 in 16 seasons for Ciego de Ávila through 2007-2008. In 2008-2009, the veteran infielder hit .330/.382/.474 and fielded .985 at second base. He won the Gold Glove that year for his fine defense. He batted .313/.355/.422 in 2009-2010 and handled 411 chances error-free to win another Gold Glove.
He was a defensive sub for Danel Castro in the 2010 Haarlem Baseball Week, going 0 for 2 with a run and handling 7 chances without an error. That December, he became the first player in franchise history to 1,500 hits. He hit .350/.397/.443 in 2010-2011 and fielded .991. He produced at a .264/.321/.306 in 2011-2012 and again fielded .991. He slumped to .190/.284/.224 in 2012-2013 then retired after 21 seasons with a .301 average and .985 fielding percentage, becoming a coach for Ciego de Ávila. He coached for the Cuban national team when they won Bronze in the 2015 Pan American Games.
