Biographcal Information[edit]
Marco Grifantini is a pitcher in the Italian Baseball League.
Grifantini had a 1.33 ERA as a college freshman, going 8-2 with a save. He went 4-0 with a 2.52 ERA his second season in junior college. Transferring to UC Davis, he fell to 0-1, 8.36 as a junior. His senior season, he had a 1-0, 2.89 record but gave up 28 hits in 18 2/3 IP.
Being of Italian descent, Grifantini was able to play in the Italian Baseball League without counting as a foreign import. Signing with Parma, he was the ace of a team with several former minor leaguers, going 5-3 with a 2.46 ERA. He struck out 74 in 73 1/3 IP and held opponents to a .194/.299/.247 batting line. Grifantini was 8th in the IBL in ERA and third in opponent average and opponent slugging.
He was with Italy for the 2009 Baseball World Cup and was a late addition to the team's roster for the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He took the loss against Team USA in the team's first round game, giving up three runs in an inning in relief of Luca Panerati, who had shut out the Americans over the first three innings; the Italians were already assured of moving on to the next round when the game started and treated the contest as an exhibition, giving almost all of their pitchers a chance to pitch in the game.
