Marcel Venema played for a few years in the Hoofdklasse. In 2005, he hit .326/.380/.348 in 20 games for the Pioniers as a backup outfielder. He batted .298/.352/.404 as the starting third baseman for the 2006 Pioniers; the youngster fielded only .898 at the hot corner. He was 21st in the league in average between Dutch national team members Martijn Meeuwis andBryan Engelhardt. In the 2006 Holland Series, he was 6 for 20 with 4 runs in 5 games.

Venema fell to .272/.321/.320 in 2007 and fielded .899 at third. In the 2007 Holland Series, the right-handed batter was 4 for 13 with two runs and a RBI.

He did not play in 2008 or 2009.
